Many of you have been asking for tips for the college recruiting process: how to start gaining exposure and things coaches may be looking for in a student-athlete.

College coaches look for athletes who meet both their athletic/academic standards/needs. They use computerized filters which allow them to search for athletes by:

• Class

• Sport/Position

• Location

• Academics

• Video/posts/updates from training

• Consistency

As it gets closer to the recruiting time frame, coaches will decifer if your attitude/personality matches the current team you would be joining. This is a key factor when it comes down to deciding between the last few candidates. Below is an ultimate team-player checklist. Use it to see if you are on the mark for what coaches strive to add to their team or if you could work to improve some personal characteristics.

  1. Am I a team player?

  2. Do I take constructive crisitsm well?

  3. Can I learn from my mistakes?

  4. Can I turn negatives into positives?

  5. Do I acknowledge when others have good day, even when mine is not up to par?

  6. Do I put things into perspective even when others might be losing their cool?

  7. Am I mindful of acting with good sportsmanship?

  8. Do I maintain behavior now that would be worthy of team expectations/rules in practice/at competition as well as in general on and off campus (ie. social settings etc.)?

  9. Do I have something unique I could provide the team?

  10. Do I have goals other than just collegiate sports?

Overall, coaches look for athletes that work hard, give effort to be their best, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually in practice, under pressure, and in the classroom.

Setting up a few mental-skills sessions with Aspire is a great way for athletes to gauge their true potential, and learn how to handle the pressures that come with the college recruiting process.
